Class II : Distorted Hub Doubling
Some believe the distorted hub doubling occurs when the working hub is over used in making working dies and becomes flat and distorted. Others believe the distortion occurs during the annealing and cooling process. As the working die or working hub is heated and cooled, some parts of the die may react differently than others, causing some design elements to become distorted.
What to look for:
If the first hubbing process affects the distorted hub or die, the doubling will be toward the center on all the design elements (Bottom of letters). If a later hubbing process affects the distorted hub or die, the doubling will be toward the rim (Top of the letters). The doubling toward the center (bottom of letters) is most common.
This example shows a 1951 Proof Lincoln cent, this is Die 1 for 1951.
